When you watch a young child figure out how to stack blocks, solve a simple puzzle, or recognize their caregiver’s face, you’re witnessing cognition in action. These everyday moments represent the remarkable mental work happening in a child’s developing brain. Understanding how cognition unfolds in early childhood helps us appreciate how children build knowledge, make sense of their world, and develop the thinking skills they’ll use throughout life.

What is cognition?
Cognition refers to how children think, explore, and figure things out. It encompasses the development of knowledge, skills, problem-solving abilities, and dispositions that help children understand the world around them. Brain development forms a crucial part of this cognitive growth.
More specifically, cognitive development involves how a person perceives, thinks, and gains understanding of their world through the interaction of genetic factors and learning experiences. This development is often described in terms of four key components: reasoning, intelligence, language, and memory.
From the moment of birth, infants actively engage in cognitive development. They aren’t passive recipients of information but rather active explorers who test and experiment with their environment. Through these explorations and experiments, supported by parents and caregivers, infants and toddlers begin to understand basic mathematical, spatial, and causal relationships.
The interplay of sensation and perception
To understand cognition, we need to distinguish between two related but different processes: sensation and perception. These form the foundation of how children gather and interpret information from their environment.
Sensation: receiving information
Sensation is the process of receiving information from the outside world through sensory receptors. For vision to occur, a child must have functional photoreceptors and a fully developed eye. For hearing, the auditory system must be operational. Newborns are born with most sensory systems nearly fully developed, though vision remains the least developed sense at birth.
The sensory abilities of newborns are quite remarkable. Babies can distinguish between different tastes, showing a preference for sweet flavors. They respond to touch and temperature and can recognize familiar voices, particularly their mother’s voice, within days of birth.
Perception: making sense of sensory input
Perception goes beyond mere sensation. It refers to the interpretation of sensory information received and happens in the brain. While infants possess functional sensory systems at birth, they initially lack perceptual knowledge-the ability to make sense of and interpret what they sense.
As children mature, they develop the ability to link information received through multiple sensory experiences, a process called intermodal perception. For example, a child learns to connect the sight of their mother’s face with the sound of her voice and the feeling of her touch. This integration of sensory information allows children to build a coherent understanding of people, objects, and events in their world.
Vision develops particularly dramatically during the first year. Newborns can focus on objects only 8 to 16 inches away, have difficulty tracking moving objects, and detect contrast better than color. However, by 2 to 3 months, infants begin seeking more visual detail and show preferences for faces, patterns, and three-dimensional objects. By 6 months, infants can perceive depth in pictures, and their visual acuity approaches that of adults.
Key cognitive functions
Three fundamental cognitive functions work together to help children understand and interact with their world: memory, problem-solving, and thinking.
Memory
Memory is the cognitive ability to acquire, retain, and recall information. In early childhood, memory develops in several forms. Short-term memory allows children to hold small amounts of information for brief periods. Working memory, which acts like a mental sticky note, keeps information at the front of the mind while using it for another task.
Memory affects how children think and learn, influencing their problem-solving and language skills as well as their ability to plan and follow directions. As infants and toddlers develop stronger memory capabilities, they can rely on past experiences to make sense of new situations. This growing memory allows them to recognize familiar people and places, anticipate routines, and remember how objects work.
Problem-solving
Problem-solving represents the ability to identify challenges and find solutions. Even very young children demonstrate problem-solving abilities. A toddler who sees a toy out of reach might climb on a safe stool to get it, or take a caregiver’s hand and lead them to the desired object.
Problem-solving becomes more complex as children gain new abilities to ask questions and gather information. Preschoolers engage in increasingly sophisticated problem-solving as they learn to consider multiple options, test different approaches, and learn from the outcomes of their actions.
Thinking and reasoning
Thinking encompasses the mental activities in which concepts, ideas, and mental representations are considered and manipulated. This includes reasoning, concept formation, and decision-making. Young children’s thinking evolves from concrete, hands-on learning to more abstract reasoning as they mature.
Initially, infants learn through direct sensory and motor experiences. As they develop, they begin to form mental representations and can think about objects and people even when they’re not immediately present. By the preschool years, children engage in symbolic thinking, using one object to represent another during play and beginning to understand abstract concepts.
The importance of cognitive development
Cognitive development doesn’t occur in isolation. It connects deeply with social, emotional, and physical growth, forming an integrated system that supports a child’s overall development.
Foundation for learning
Early cognitive development provides the foundation for later academic success. Research shows that children who can distinguish sounds at six months of age are better at acquiring the skills for learning to read at four and five years of age. The cognitive skills developed in early childhood-attention, memory, problem-solving-directly support learning in school and beyond.
Links to social and emotional development
Cognitive development enables children to understand social relationships and manage emotions. As children develop memory and thinking skills, they can recognize familiar caregivers, anticipate routines, and understand cause-and-effect relationships in social interactions. These cognitive abilities help children build secure attachments and develop empathy.
The ability to think about others’ perspectives, remember social rules, and problem-solve during conflicts all depend on cognitive development. As children develop cognitively, they begin to understand how other people feel, which is important to building relationships.
Supporting physical development
Cognitive development and physical development work hand in hand. Motor experiences provide opportunities for cognitive learning, while cognitive abilities guide motor actions. For example, depth perception-a perceptual skill-helps crawling infants navigate their environment safely. Memory helps children learn and refine motor skills like riding a bike or using utensils.
Promoting cognitive development
Parents and caregivers play a vital role in fostering cognitive development. Simple, everyday interactions make a significant difference. Talking with babies and naming objects, letting infants explore toys and their environment, singing and reading together, and answering children’s endless “why” questions all support cognitive growth.
Providing choices encourages decision-making skills. Allowing children time to figure out problems independently, with gentle guidance when needed, builds problem-solving abilities and confidence. Exposing children to varied experiences-books, puzzles, nature, music-enriches their cognitive development by offering diverse opportunities to learn and think.
