When we talk about biological differences between men and women, it’s easy to fall into outdated stereotypes that have nothing to do with science and everything to do with social bias. The truth is that while men and women do have distinct biological characteristics determined by genetics and hormones, many common beliefs about these differences are rooted in misconceptions rather than facts. Understanding the real science behind sex differences helps us recognize that diversity exists within and between the sexes, and that biological variations don’t justify limiting anyone’s potential.

The genetic basis of sex determination
At the moment of conception, a child’s biological sex is determined by chromosomes inherited from both parents. Every human has 23 pairs of chromosomes, including one pair of sex chromosomes. Females typically have two X chromosomes (XX), while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). Since mothers always contribute an X chromosome, it’s the father’s sperm that determines the child’s sex by carrying either an X or Y chromosome.
This chromosomal difference triggers a cascade of developmental events. The Y chromosome carries the SRY gene, which acts as a master switch for male development. When present, this gene directs the formation of testes around the seventh week of fetal development. Without the Y chromosome, ovaries develop instead. It’s important to note that both male and female development are active processes requiring specific genes-neither is simply a “default” state.
Yet historically, many societies have blamed women for not producing male children, a belief still prevalent in some patriarchal cultures today. This misconception ignores basic genetics. The father’s sperm determines whether a child will be male or female, not the mother’s egg. Understanding this scientific fact helps dismantle one of the oldest and most harmful gender-based myths that has been used to justify discrimination against women.
Hormonal influences: Testosterone, estrogens, and their effects
While chromosomes set the initial path, hormones shape the physical differences we associate with men and women. The two major classes of sex hormones are androgens (like testosterone) and estrogens (like estradiol). However, it’s a misconception to think of these as strictly “male” or “female” hormones. Both men and women produce both types of hormones, just in different quantities.
Testosterone in men and women
Men traditionally have more testosterone in their system than women, with this hormone promoting male characteristics such as facial hair and a deeper voice. Testosterone is produced primarily in the testes in men and contributes to muscle growth, bone density, and sperm production. However, women also produce testosterone in their ovaries and adrenal glands, where it plays important roles in bone health, muscle strength, and sexual function.
Estrogens in men and women
Similarly, while estrogen is higher in women and regulates the menstrual cycle, breast development, and bone health, men also produce estrogen, particularly through the conversion of testosterone by the enzyme aromatase. In men, estrogen is essential for bone health, sexual function, and even sperm production. Studies have shown that men lacking the ability to produce estrogen suffer from bone problems and reproductive issues, proving that estrogen isn’t just important for women.
The key difference is quantity and balance. Men typically have testosterone levels about 15 times higher than women, while women have higher estrogen levels during most of their reproductive years. These hormonal differences contribute to distinct physical characteristics including muscle mass distribution, fat storage patterns, and reproductive anatomy. But the presence of both hormone types in both sexes reminds us that biology is more nuanced than simple categories suggest.
Addressing misconceptions around strength and fertility
The myth of female weakness
One of the most persistent stereotypes is that women are inherently weak compared to men. While it’s true that men on average have about 40 percent more upper-body strength and 33 percent more lower-body strength than women, this statistical average doesn’t tell the whole story.
First, there’s enormous variation within each sex. Some women are stronger than many men, and some men are physically weaker than many women. When researchers adjusted for lean body mass rather than total body weight, the strength differences between equally trained male and female athletes became much smaller for certain muscle groups. This shows that much of the difference relates to body composition, not inherent incapacity.
Second, societal factors play a huge role in physical fitness gaps. Girls are often discouraged from physical activity from a young age, with phrases like “girls don’t get dirty” or “sport isn’t for girly girls” limiting their development. Research shows that by ages 8 to 12, girls are already about 20 percent less active than boys, leading to lower fitness levels that have nothing to do with biological potential.
Throughout history, women have performed demanding physical labor-carrying water, grinding grain, working in agriculture, and raising children while doing all of this. Today, women make up close to half of agricultural workers worldwide. Women’s muscles also tend to be more resistant to fatigue than men’s, meaning they can perform at the same relative intensity for longer durations. The narrative of female frailty falls apart when we examine the actual physical capabilities women demonstrate when given equal opportunities for development.
The misconception about sex determination and fertility
Another harmful misconception blames women for the sex of children or for infertility related to having daughters. As we’ve established, the father’s contribution determines whether a child will be male or female. Yet in many patriarchal societies, women have faced rejection, divorce, or worse for not producing male heirs-a situation that reflects social prejudice rather than biological reality.
Similarly, some believe that women are solely responsible for fertility issues. In reality, fertility problems affect both sexes equally. Male factor infertility accounts for approximately 40-50 percent of all fertility cases, while female factor infertility accounts for another 40-50 percent, with the remaining cases involving both partners or unexplained causes. Blaming women exclusively for fertility challenges ignores the complexity of human reproduction.
Moving beyond biological determinism
Understanding biological differences doesn’t mean accepting social limitations. Yes, hormones and chromosomes create certain average differences between male and female bodies. But these biological facts don’t justify restricting opportunities, perpetuating stereotypes, or treating one sex as inferior to the other.
The variation within each sex is often greater than the average difference between sexes. Environmental factors, nutrition, training, and social expectations dramatically influence physical capabilities. When women have equal access to physical training and athletic development, they achieve remarkable feats of strength and endurance. When men are freed from toxic expectations about aggression and dominance, they can express the full range of human emotions and capabilities.
The real issue isn’t biology-it’s how society has used selective interpretations of biological differences to justify inequality. Dismantling patriarchal beliefs requires recognizing that biological diversity is natural and that physical differences don’t determine human worth, capability, or potential. Every person, regardless of sex, deserves opportunities to develop their strengths and pursue their goals without being limited by outdated stereotypes masquerading as scientific fact.
