Developed through forty-five years of research at Harvard University, SYMLOG evaluates members along dominance versus submissiveness, friendliness versus unfriendliness, and task-orientation versus emotional expressiveness.
Picture a classroom group project. Using SYMLOG, you might discover that the natural leader scores high on dominance and task-orientation but low on friendliness, creating tension. Meanwhile, the most liked member shows high friendliness but low dominance and high emotional expressiveness, serving as emotional support without contributing much to task completion. The system contains 26 descriptive items which probe and assess key factors known to directly influence effectiveness, creating a comprehensive profile of each group member and the overall group dynamic.

The Conflict subscale assesses interpersonal anger, distancing, and tension.
For instance, a high school counseling group might score high on engagement and low on avoidance, suggesting students feel connected and willing to discuss difficult topics. However, if conflict scores run high, it indicates that while students are engaged, they struggle to resolve disagreements constructively. There is some evidence to suggest that Engagement is predictive of changes in social anxiety over the course of treatment.
Cohesiveness scales
Cohesiveness-that sense of “we’re all in this together”-proves crucial for group success. Group cohesion refers to the processes that keep members of a social group connected, and various scales measure this quality. The Group Cohesiveness Scale evaluates attraction to the group, unity of purpose, and quality of teamwork. High cohesiveness correlates with better performance, stronger commitment, and greater satisfaction among members.
In a sports team context, a cohesiveness scale might reveal that while players respect each other’s skills, they lack social bonds outside practice. This insight guides interventions like team-building activities to strengthen interpersonal connections alongside athletic performance.
