Can physical appearance predict criminal behavior? In the mid-20th century, psychologist William Sheldon proposed a controversial theory suggesting that body shape could reveal personality traits and even criminal tendencies. While this idea has been largely discredited, understanding these body type theories reveals how criminology has evolved from biological determinism to more sophisticated biosocial approaches.

The birth of somatotyping
William Sheldon developed a classification system in the 1940s that divided human physiques into three distinct categories called somatotypes. Each body type, he argued, corresponded with specific temperamental characteristics and behavioral patterns. Sheldon created a three-digit rating system where each body type was scored from 1 to 7 based on physical measurements and visual assessment.
The first category, endomorphs, described individuals with soft, rounded physiques characterized by higher body fat and wider waists. Sheldon associated endomorphs with a viscerotonic temperament, suggesting they were sociable, relaxed, comfort-seeking, and emotionally warm. The second type, mesomorphs, featured muscular, athletic builds with broad shoulders and low body fat. These individuals were thought to possess a somatotonic temperament marked by energy, assertiveness, and aggression. Finally, ectomorphs had slim, fragile frames with narrow shoulders and fast metabolisms. Sheldon linked this body type to a cerebrotonic temperament characterized by introversion, sensitivity, and anxiety.
Connecting physique to criminal behavior
Sheldon’s theory took a darker turn when he applied it to criminology. In his 1949 book “Varieties of Delinquent Youth,” Sheldon claimed that mesomorphic individuals were more prone to delinquency due to their assertive and aggressive temperamental traits. He studied 200 delinquent boys and compared them to 200 non-delinquent college students, concluding that muscular builds were associated with criminal tendencies.
Building on Sheldon’s work, researchers Juan B. Cortes and Florence M. Gatti took a more nuanced approach. In 1972, they introduced a biopsychosocial framework that examined relationships between physique, temperament, achievement motivation, discipline, and environmental factors. Rather than suggesting that body type alone determined criminal behavior, they argued that mesomorphic traits interacted with psychological and social variables to influence delinquency. This represented a significant departure from pure biological determinism.
The research team of Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck also investigated physique and delinquency in their landmark studies. Their 1950 study “Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency” compared 500 delinquent boys with 500 non-delinquent boys matched by age, ethnicity, intelligence, and socioeconomic status. While they found that delinquents tended to have more muscular builds, the Gluecks emphasized that physique was merely one factor among many psychological and environmental influences.
Why body type theories resonated
These theories gained traction partly because they offered simple explanations for complex social problems. The mesomorphic build, being naturally stronger and more physically imposing, seemed to align with stereotypes about violent criminals. A 2008 study examining Arkansas prisoners found that 68.6% had mesomorphic physiques upon entering the correctional system, though this correlation does not prove causation.
Challenging biological determinism
Scientific criticism of body type theories emerged almost immediately. Leading criminologist Edwin Sutherland sharply criticized Sheldon’s research methods, noting that his data did not support his claims and his samples were biased. Sheldon’s measurements relied heavily on subjective visual judgment rather than objective scientific assessment, and results varied widely depending on who conducted the evaluation.
Beyond methodological flaws, the theories faced serious ethical criticism. Psychologist Robert Holt described Sheldon’s work as “dangerously fascistic pseudo-science” due to its connections with eugenics and biological determinism. The theories promoted harmful stereotypes, suggesting that endomorphs were lazy, mesomorphs were aggressive, and ectomorphs were anxious-labels that reinforced discrimination based on physical appearance.
The role of social and environmental factors
Critics emphasized that criminal behavior cannot be predicted by physique alone. Modern criminology recognizes that crime emerges from complex interactions between individual characteristics and environmental conditions. Poverty, family dysfunction, peer influence, education, and community resources all play crucial roles in shaping behavior. A muscular physique does not cause criminality any more than a slim build causes intellectualism.
Research has shown that environmental factors can either suppress or enhance behavioral tendencies regardless of body type. Children at genetic risk for antisocial behavior who grow up in positive family environments typically do not display criminal behavior, while children without such genetic risk rarely become antisocial even in adverse environments.
Evolution toward biosocial approaches
Despite their flaws, body type theories contributed to the development of modern biosocial criminology. Contemporary biosocial criminology examines how biological and social factors interact to influence behavior, moving far beyond simplistic physical appearance assessments. This interdisciplinary field incorporates behavioral genetics, neuropsychology, and evolutionary psychology while acknowledging environmental influences.
Modern biosocial theories recognize that genes and environments operate in tandem, with neither being powerful enough to produce significant antisocial behavior independently. Disadvantaged environments can enhance antisocial gene expression while suppressing prosocial tendencies, but biological factors alone do not determine criminal outcomes.
From somatotypes to neuroscience
Today’s biosocial research focuses on brain structure, neurotransmitter levels, and hormonal influences rather than body shape. Neuroimaging studies demonstrate that both brain structure and function are involved in criminal behaviors, with the limbic system generating emotions like anger while the prefrontal cortex moderates impulse control. When this balance shifts, it may contribute to antisocial behavior-but always in interaction with environmental factors.
The field has also embraced developmental perspectives. Researchers now examine how brain development, stress responses, and neuropsychological functioning change throughout the life course, affecting both criminal involvement and desistance from crime. This approach recognizes that risk factors are not fixed but can be modified through intervention and environmental change.
Lessons learned from body type theories
While Sheldon’s somatotype theory has been rejected as scientifically invalid, it offers important lessons for criminology. First, it demonstrates the dangers of biological determinism and the harm caused by reducing complex human behavior to simple physical characteristics. Second, it highlights how scientific theories can reinforce existing prejudices rather than challenge them.
The evolution from body type theories to modern biosocial approaches represents genuine scientific progress. Current research incorporates biosocial factors like genetics, neurobiology, and physiology into comprehensive models that also account for psychological and environmental influences. This multifactorial perspective improves risk assessment and rehabilitation efforts without stigmatizing individuals based on appearance.
The terminology from Sheldon’s work-endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph-persists today, but only in fitness and sports science contexts where it describes body composition rather than predicting personality or behavior. This limited application represents an appropriate legacy: acknowledging that bodies differ in physical characteristics while rejecting unfounded claims about character or criminality.
