These persistent problems create long-term health and environmental consequences that affect both current and future generations.
The pervasive problem of pollution
Air pollution: a public health emergency
Air pollution stands as one of India’s most pressing environmental challenges. According to the 2021 World Air Quality Report, India is home to 63 of the 100 most polluted cities, with New Delhi ranking as the capital with the worst air quality globally. PM2.5 concentrations in nearly half of the country’s cities exceed WHO guidelines by more than ten times.
The sources of air pollution are diverse: vehicular emissions, industrial waste, crop burning, construction activities, and power generation all contribute to deteriorating air quality. India’s heavy reliance on coal, oil, and gas has made it the world’s third-largest polluter, emitting over 2.65 billion metric tonnes of carbon annually.

Currently, only about 5% of collected waste is recycled, 18% is composted, and the remainder ends up in landfills. The plastic crisis is particularly severe, with India producing more than 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste daily.

Agricultural practices contribute to environmental degradation through excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and water resources. Over 85% of India’s freshwater is used in agriculture, often inefficiently. Industrial activities, meanwhile, release toxic substances into air, water, and soil, with manufacturing technology placing heavy loads on the environment through intensive resource and energy use.
Essential conservation measures
Afforestation and forest conservation
India has committed to ambitious forest conservation goals. The country plans to increase forest cover from 25% to 33% and restore 26 million hectares of land by 2030. Through the Green India Mission and National Afforestation Program, the government aims to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
The Forest Conservation Act of 1980 makes central government approval mandatory for converting forest land to non-forest purposes. For each unit of diverted land, compensatory afforestation on equivalent non-forest land is required.
Pollution control technologies
Developing and implementing pollution-free technologies is crucial for environmental conservation. This includes transitioning to cleaner energy sources, improving industrial processes to reduce emissions, and upgrading waste treatment infrastructure. The government has initiated measures such as banning single-use plastics and promoting renewable energy to reduce environmental impacts.

Reducing resource exploitation requires comprehensive policy interventions. This includes promoting water conservation, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, limiting the use of harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and implementing circular economy principles to minimize waste generation.

Creating greater environmental awareness among citizens is fundamental to addressing degradation. Education initiatives, community participation in conservation efforts, and promoting environmentally responsible behavior all contribute to building a culture of sustainability. International environmental agreements
Global environmental challenges require international cooperation. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed in 1987, demonstrates how effective international cooperation can address environmental threats. Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called it “perhaps the single most successful international agreement to date.”
The protocol has achieved universal ratification and successfully phased out 98% of ozone-depleting substances worldwide. Its success shows that when nations work together with clear scientific guidance and equitable burden-sharing, significant environmental progress is possible.
Similarly, the Kyoto Protocol and subsequent Paris Agreement represent efforts to address climate change through international cooperation. India has been an active participant in these negotiations, balancing economic development needs with environmental commitments.
India’s role in global environmental protection
India is the only G20 nation currently on track to achieve its Paris Agreement climate goals. The country has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and aims for a 50% share of renewables in its energy mix by 2030. These ambitious targets demonstrate India’s commitment to environmental protection despite being a developing economy with significant growth imperatives.
However, challenges remain. India faces criticism for refusing to sign certain international commitments, such as the COP26 pledge to stop deforestation, citing concerns about impacts on rural livelihoods and the agricultural sector. Balancing environmental protection with economic development and poverty alleviation continues to be a complex challenge.
Addressing environmental degradation in India requires coordinated action across multiple fronts. From controlling population growth and promoting sustainable technologies to large-scale afforestation and phasing out harmful substances, comprehensive measures are essential. Success depends not only on government policies and international cooperation but also on widespread public awareness and participation in conservation efforts. The stakes are high, as environmental degradation threatens not just ecological systems but also public health, economic prosperity, and social stability. Only through sustained commitment and collective action can India build a sustainable environmental future.
